Material: wood

Dimensions: cm 57 x cm 20 x cm 23

Country of origin: Burkina Faso

Splendid zoomorphic African mask of the Gurunsi population of southwestern Burkina Faso, in the shape of a rooster, with the typical protruding eyes surrounded by concentric circles in the usual polychromy of black, red and white.

Curious Note : among the so-called Gurunsi peoples of Burkina Faso the masks represent the spirits of the bush, which often take on animal forms. These african masks  are generally worn during festivities that are held to invoke rain or allow for a good harvest, at the end of initiations or at the funerals of notables. The wearer of the mask must behave as the animal does, imitating its gait.
