620,00

Materials: sheep’s wool

Dimensions: cm 220 x cm 145  (approximately 7,2 ft by 4,8 ft)

Country of origin: Kyrgyzstan

Black and white rug made of felt called Shyrdak. The carpet is made entirely by hand in Kyrgyzstan by artisan women who, following ancient techniques, keep this centuries-old tradition of the country alive.

The black and white rug consists of two layers of wool felt. The top layer features decorative Kyrgyz motifs in cream and black colors and a narrow decorative central stripe woven from natural wool. The braided cord (jeek) around the designs is white, while the one that delimits the carpet is two-tone in black and white. The second layer of felt, which creates the base of the Shyrdak, is made of a stronger wool than the top layer. This wool gives a rigid shape to the carpet and has excellent insulating properties.

The long edges of the rug are decorated with motifs of birds of prey, which, in the beliefs of the Kyrgyz people, are the protectors of the clan and a symbol of strength. In the central part, the artisans used plant motifs from the flora of the mountain steppe. These motifs show the richness of the Kyrgyz land and the respect of the nomads for mother nature.

Unique piece.
