Suzani is a traditional fabric from Central Asia, with hand-embroidered decorative motifs. The name derives from the Persian word “suzan” which means needle. The basic fabric is generally in cotton, but sometimes it is in silk or linen, embroidered with silk or cotton threads, rarely wool.
The main embroidery stitches used are the chain stitch, the satin stitch (“basma”) and the running stitch, so that by changing the direction of the needle, the thickness of the thread and the colors, different weft and depth effects are obtained.
Since traditionally Suzani were made by brides and their mothers as part of their wedding dowry and presented to the groom on the wedding day, they are adorned with decorative motifs that symbolize luck, abundance, fertility.
